On 16 June 2025, the grounds of Dlangezwa High School came alive with song, movement, and meaningful reflection as learners, educators, and dignitaries gathered to commemorate South Africa’s Youth Day. The event, led by the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal, paid homage to the courage and sacrifice of the 1976 generation, those young South Africans whose defiance sparked a national call for change.

More than a historical commemoration, the day served as a celebration of progress and a call to action for today’s youth to carry forward the legacy of those who fought for justice, dignity, and access to quality education.

Flying the Isibani Flag High

Isibani Development Partners’ Adolescent and Young People Programme was proudly represented by Ms Mthiyane, a dedicated Learner Support Agent, along with a team of peer educators actively engaged in school-based and community health promotion. Their participation reflected Isibani’s commitment to youth empowerment and civic engagement.

A powerful address by one of the peer educators captured the spirit of the day. Reflecting on the Soweto Uprising, she spoke about the importance of recognising the sacrifices made by the youth of 1976 and how their resilience laid the foundation for the freedoms enjoyed today. “Their fight was not in vain,” she remarked. “Because of their bold steps, we are able to speak up, learn freely, and lead change in our communities.”

Celebrating Through Culture and Movement

The commemorative event also included vibrant displays of cultural expression. Learners performed a traditional freedom dance and participated in a drum majorette parade, accompanying the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal. These artistic expressions brought energy, pride, and joy to the event, demonstrating how reflection and celebration can coexist meaningfully.

Supporting Youth-Led Development

The involvement of Isibani’s peer educators is a strong example of youth-led development in action. By participating in such high-profile commemorations, young people are not only given a platform to be heard but are also empowered to lead with purpose.

Through its Adolescent and Young People Programme, Isibani Development Partners continues to invest in holistic youth development, focusing on health education, psychosocial support, leadership, and skills development. These efforts align with national goals to foster active, informed, and resilient young citizens.
